"New Jersey artist Neal Hughes uses
his considerable artistic skills as an act of
celebration and testament, and he is
rewarded with inspiration that helps him
make creative decisions that elevate his oil
landscapes."

Artist's Statement:
I am an American realist painter. I paint because I enjoy the act of painting and I am attracted to work that has been executed by masters who have a thorough knowledge of the basics such as drawing, color theory and painting technique and that have mastered expressing form which is the primary language of painting.
Most of these paintings were executed before the early part of the twentieth century and are the result of teaching methods that were mostly abandoned and which are now being appreciated again by many artists and people who collect or enjoy art.
I feel that there is something special in the paintings of these masters who attempted to create something beautiful and I share their goals of trying to build upon the past and improving the understanding of the relationship between beauty and nature.
I find great joy in discovering this relationship and in trying to interpret the beauty of nature and to transform it into art. By observing nature and using my artistic abilities I try to establish an emotional connection to my subject that will also be experienced by the viewer and that will allow them to sense something larger than the object or scene before them.

I paint with the Rancocas Valley Plein Air Painters and I paint the figure regularly with a group of artists that meet in my studio or other location.
